A lovely report from one of the volunteers and organisers of Cove Youth Café in Ballybunion Rescue, Cathy Sadlier
The Cove Youth Café – The Year That Was 2014
Volunteers at the Helm of Youth Space Ballybunion
The Cove Youth Café serving the young people of the community.
The young people of our town have had to cope with the tragic and sudden loss of two of their peers. During this time the Cove provided a space supported by volunteers, parents and KDYS to have the café open through the weeks in which they journeyed through their loss.
The Cove acted as a central point for bringing together a range of groups in the community, Active Age, Tidy Towns, Men’s Sheds, Women’s Group and Primary & Secondary schools by holding a fundraising quiz in the Spring. This proved to be a successful event for all concerned and deepened relationships within the community, for example the Men’s Shed funded by NEKD went on to make frames for art pieces the young people had created.
Following the summer we returned with a renewed vision to set up a 6th class programme in conjunction with KDYS which is proving to be a highly successful with the support of KDYS and volunteers. This programme helps with the transition from primary to secondary school. To date the young people have had numerous workshops, training, outings and plenty of fun thrown in!
Another initiative taken on by the management committee who are also volunteers, was to run a music night to encourage the young people’s talent in singing, dancing and music in a relaxed manner. This has continued to grow.
We have a vibrant youth committee who participated in the youth awards in Castleisland over the summer, and are now going on to complete an art project in the café to enhance the window space and have put themselves forward to help with the local Montessori school for the Christmas parade to be held on December 7th. The spirit of Christmas is certainly alive and well with the youth giving back to the community.
On behalf of the volunteer team I would like to thank everyone who has supported us and made this space possible.
