NEWKD, in conjunction with Pobal and the Department of Rural & Community Development, is delivering the Seniors Alert Scheme (personal alarm) in the North, East and West Kerry areas.

The Seniors Alert Scheme enables older persons (over 65) to continue to live securely in their homes, with confidence, independence and peace of mind by providing them with a free personal monitored alarm.   After the first year a nominal fee will be paid annually for the maintenance and monitoring of the alarm service. Users no longer need to be living alone to be eligible for the scheme and do not need to have a landline.

All users will be connected to a national Seniors Alert Scheme helpline through either their landline or mobile phone. When the user activates the personalised alarm a call is put through to the 24 hour national call centre. The call centre operator speaks to the person in their home and decides whether or not to alert the person / people they (the user) have nominated or, in more serious circumstances, the emergency services.

Alarms are waterproof so can be used in the shower/bath and can be worn as a pendant around the neck or on the wrist like a watch; ensuring assistance is always available no matter where the person is in their home. Over 60,000 people nation-wide have received the personalised alarm from the Government under the Seniors Alert Scheme since 2010.
